2011 National History Day: OVERVIEW The objective of this Agreement is to provide a benefit to history teachers and students through a cooperative agreement and assistance to National History Day. In Fiscal Year 2010, Congress appropriated funds to create a new program in the National Park Service to promote the teaching of history and civics at the sites preserved by the National Park Service where many of our nations major historical events occurred. Included in the authorization of this funding is the emphasis on the National Park Service working cooperatively with the Department of Education and other educational partners, like, National History Day, in achieving its educational and public outreach goals. The National Park Service has been authorized by 16 U.S.C. 1g to enter into cooperative agreements and to provide financial assistance to public and private nonprofit organizations, when determined by the Secretary of Interior to be in the public interest. In order for the National Park Service to administer the Teaching History and Civics program and carry out its goals, an active partnership with National History Day is being established. STATEMENT OF JOINT OBJECTIVES/PROJECT MANAGEMENT PLAN Collaborate in providing learning opportunities for students and teachers participating in National History Day student contests and professional development workshops. RECIPIENT INVOLVEMENT Collaborate with the National Park Service to provide opportunities for history students and teachers to participate in local, state and national competitions, professional development workshops, and other educational activities that teach historical thinking, interpretation and research skills. Distribute publications and materials that interpret historical events and themes included in the public education programs of the National Park Service throughout its network of 30,000 educators across the country and internationally. Collaborate with the National Park Service in development and presentation of professional development workshops for educators. Provide educators with information about historical events and programs provided by the National Park Service through its electronic networks such as Facebook, Twitter, email blasts. Provide publications and materials with information about National Park Service interpretive programs and events in state coordinator packets distributed at the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE INVOLVEMENT Assist National History Day in the planning and implementation of local, state, and national student history contests through collaboration, consultation, and financial assistance in providing resource books, award medals, and professional development opportunities for teachers. Provide financial assistance in the amount of $25,000.00 to assist in the publication of a Civil War Sesquicentennial resource book to be distributed to teachers at the Kenneth E Behring National Contest in June 2011. Provide financial assistance in the amount of $10,000.00 to assist in the purchase of medals to be awarded to student winners at the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest in June 2011. Provide speakers to make presentations at the opening and closing ceremonies during the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest in June 2011. Assist National History Day in providing professional development workshops for educators by providing subject matter experts, tour guides, park publications, and assist in facilitating field trips to National Park Service historic sites. Provide NPS publications and materials for 55 state coordinator packets to be distributed at the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest. Encourage and facilitate NPS staff in field and support offices to participate in local, state, and national contests as judges.
