A Systems Approach to Salivary Gland Biology (R01): -Purpose. The goal of this FOA is to stimulate innovative research in the application of a systems biology approach to inform as well as predict salivary gland function, dysfunction and response to treatment of salivary gland disorders. This FOA is designed to encourage investigations that couple experimentation and computation to generate integrative models of salivary gland signaling networks, cellular processes or functional modules. Therefore, the research design must comprise two components, an experimental component and a computational/modeling component, and with these components linked by iterative refinement. Consistent with this program design, the use of a multiple Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs) model that would recruit complementary and collaborative expertise to conduct the project is strongly encouraged. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-DE-08-002, that solicits career development applications under the K25 Mentored Quantitative Research Development Award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIDCR intends to commit up to a total of $3.0 million in FY2008 to support meritorius projects that are responsive to this FOA. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
