Accelerating the Pace of Drug Abuse Research Using Existing Epidemiology, Prevention, and Treatment Research Data (R01): Purpose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invite applications to support the innovative analysis of existing social science and behavioral data to study the etiology and epidemiology of drug using behaviors (defined as alcohol, tobacco, and other drug), HIV risk behaviors, related disorders, prevention and treatment of these behaviors, and health service utilization including quality, access, and costs. NIDA and NCI encourage coordinated analyses of substance abuse research data that are in public use or that are privately held by a principal investigator. The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) joins this FOA as part of its effort to promote research on the behavioral and social aspects of health and illness. However, only participating ICs will provide direct grant support under this announcement. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the R01 grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIDA has set aside approximately $2 million to fund 5-8 grants through this FOA for FY2010. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
