Affordable Sensor Technology Development (ASTD): The Affordable Sensor Technology Development (ASTD) Program is an effort to develop advanced, revolutionary and innovative radio frequency (RF), microwave and millimeter wave sensor technologies addressing space based, airborne, Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) and ground based applications. Emerging electronically scanned apertures, including the digitization of the microwave signals, will permit an order of magnitude increase in sensor performance. Future space based and ground based sensing platforms require large, affordable phased arrays. To field these practical weapon systems, reductions are sought in the array volume, mass, power consumption, and cost areas. Antenna panel innovations through the combination of novel architectures, highly functional components and highly integrated fabrication techniques will have great payoff. Future UAVs will require revolutionary technologies, smart skin/structure, miniature avionics, shared apertures, fiber-optic data buses, wireless integration technology, ultra reliable, ultra low power electronics, standard, modular, multifunctional, integrated avionic architectures, data compression, data fusion, data storage technology, all digital avionics, and structurally integrated conformal arrays. To achieve these goals, the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Sensors Directorate has committed resources to the development of an advanced technology base for materials, devices, circuits and component structures and the assessment and verification of these sensors in demonstrator subsystem brass boards.
