Alcohol, AIDS, and Liver Disease: Preventable Side-effects of Antiretroviral Therapy (R21): -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is intended to stimulate research on new preventive and therapeutic approaches to alcohol- and antiretroviral drug- induced liver disease in patients with AIDS. Alcohol consumption is widely acknowledged as a co-factor in the sexual transmission, susceptibility to infection, and progression of HIV; however a relationship between alcohol use in the context of antiretroviral therapy and adverse outcomes, notably liver disease progression, is less recognized. Recent research indicates that inflammatory pathways predominate in alcoholic hepatitis whereas adaptive immunity plays a primary role in viral hepatitis, offering multiple targets for novel preventive and therapeutic interventions. This FOA emphasizes the need to explore new targets and encourages the development of novel preventive and therapeutic interventions that protect the liver from alcohol and antiretroviral drug- induced liver injury. A better understanding of liver disease should translate to improved care for HIV-infected patients, many of whom continue to consume alcohol. -Mechanism of Support. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the NIH Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-AA-08-013, that solicits applications under the R01 mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total amount to be awarded under this FOA and the companion FOA (RFA-AA-08-013) is $2 million. The anticipated number of awards is 6-8. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
