Alcohol Education Project Grants (R25): -Purpose. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) supports research programs to advance understanding of the biological and behavioral processes involved in the development, expression, and consequences of alcoholism and other alcohol-related problems. The Institute also supports prevention, treatment, and health services research on alcohol abuse and alcoholism. A part of the NIAAA mission is the dissemination of new knowledge acquired from alcohol research to diverse audiences including scientists, educators, clinicians and other health and social service providers, patients and their families, professionals within the criminal justice system, and the general public. This FOA identifies three health education activities that NIAAA will consider for award through Research Education grants (R25): 1) K-12 Science Education and Undergraduate/Graduate Education; 2) Health Professions Education; and 3) Public Health Education. Individual applications are expected to focus on one of these three educational areas. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Research Education (R25) grant mechanism. -Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.

Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. Eligible agencies of the Federal Government can apply. Faith-based or community-based organizations can apply. Sponsoring Institution: The sponsoring institution must assure support for the proposed research education project. Appropriate institutional commitment to the project includes the provision of adequate staff, facilities, and educational resources that can contribute to the planned research education project. Additionally, the sponsoring institution must demonstrate the ability to provide one or more of the following: a) educational activities directed toward enhancing the knowledge of primary/secondary school educators and/or students and/or undergraduate/graduate students on the science of alcohol and alcohol-related problems; b) projects designed to support the dissemination of new knowledge acquired through alcohol research to a wide array of health professionals -- both individuals currently practicing their professions and those in training for health professions ; and c) educational activities directed to patients, their families, and the general public, which impart knowledge gained through research on alcohol-related health issues, including those addressing prevention, screening, and treatment. Participants: Not Applicable. Applications must contain an evaluation plan and a dissemination plan. Applications submitted without these sections may be delayed in the review process or not reviewed. Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct.
