As most of theconventional reservoirs have already been discovered, it will be necessarytodrill into unconventional, more complex, deeper, harsher, and lower-qualityreservoirs to search for tomorrow?s gas supply. These unconventionalsourcesare known to contain vast quantities of gas across large areas andthroughoutthick columns of strata in many of the nation?s basins, however;approximatelyless than 1% of this gas can be produced economically. Therefore, newtechnologies are needed to make these resources economic and help thenationmeet its energy needs. Additionally technologies to economically accessandproduce from the deep (>20,000 feet) and/or high temperature(>250/degrees/C) highpressures (>20,000 psi) caustic gas resources are also included in thisAnnouncement. The technologies and needs to drill and produce the deephorizons have been identified in the Deep Trek R D Planning Workshop heldMarch20-21, 2001 and by industry forums such as The Gulf of Mexico Shallow WaterDeep Gas workshops.To achieve the objectives, the DOE/NETL, through the Office of Natural Gas,isrequesting applications under three (3) Areas of Interest. This cover pagecontains information and allows for submission of an application for AreaofInterest 1: Deep Trek ONLY.DE-PS26-05NT42395-1Area of Interest 1: Deep TrekApplications would include research that fits under the DOE?s Deep TrekProgram, which focuses on developing very deep (>20,000 feet) drilling andcompletion technologies that can operate in high temperature (>250 C), highpressure (>20,000 psi), hard rock, corrosive environments. Thesetemperatureand pressure conditions apply to all subtopics in this Area of Interestunlessotherwise noted. Possible areas include but are not limited to:1. Advanced and/or Smart Drilling Systems to reduce drilling flat (down)timeand increase drilling efficiencies, well control, and hole stability withlittle or no damage to target or pass through formations.a. Novel, new and different changes in tools and drilling methods toreduce oreliminate conventional trip timesb. New methods/technology that allows drilling and tripping without shutdownor cessation of circulationsc. UBD (underbalanced drilling) techniques (technology integration,demonstration, and other) to manage surface pressure and downhole eventsunderUBD or NBD (near balanced or managed pressure drilling) conditionsd. Inexpensive onshore Rotary Steerable Systems or other directionalsystemsto enable cost effective onshore multilateral extended reach completions inthecontinental U.S. at conventional temperatures and pressures as well asHPHTe. Integration of novel smart tools into current DOE-sponsored smart pipeconcepts i. IntelliPipe ii. Composite drill pipef. Novel Air Hammers to drill effectively, rapidly, and economically influidsensitive areas at moderate to deep depthsg. Development of a drilling system (bit and hydraulics) that mitigate theadverse affects of high well bore pressures by effectively removing the?pulverized? rock from the cutter trajectory or path (synonymous to chipholddown or regrinding of the rock that reduces the drilling effectivenessespecially at high well bore pressures).2. High Temperature Electronics and components (capacitors,microprocessors,etc), high temperature batteries (rechargeable and operable from25/degrees/C to 250/degrees/Cor higher), and down-hole generators,3. Drilling Diagnostics and Sensor Systems at high temperature andpressure4. Drilling Fluids, Completion, and stimulation fluidsa. Advanced technologies of well control, hole stability with little or nodamage to target formation or pass through formationsb. New concept changing non-damaging drilling fluids and (non-damagingnon-infiltrating) smart fluidsc. Hydraulic fracturing fluids5. Concept changing materials?New advanced metallurgy and or materials fortubulars, seals, and tools6. Advanced motors and drilling systems7. The use of nanotechnology science in any of the above areas.a. A Joint industry partnership that would advance the application ofnanotechnology science in the O G industry is encouraged (e.g., HSE impactofusing components developed using nanotechnology)
