Grant Description
NOTE: This descriptive area provides an overview of Area of Interest 1 only. YOU MUST READ THE ENTIRE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT DOCUMENT FOR DETAILS ON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPARE AN APPLICATION UNDER AN AREA OF INTEREST. Please scroll to the bottom of this page to access the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA Master.doc). Area of Interest 1: DEVELOPMENT AND SCALE-UP OF NOVEL POLISHING FILTER MATERIALS AND DEVICES Objective: This Area of Interest solicits research, development and scale-up of advanced materials and devices for producing ultra-pure hydrogen from coal-derived synthesis gas. Hydrogen has the potential to be used in a number of end-use applications each having its own purity standard. For this Funding Opportunity Announcement, the fuel gas requirements as outlined in Table 1 shall define the DOE targeted levels of product hydrogen purity for the various applications which may be proposed by the applicant. (Table 1 can be found in the Master Funding Opportunity Announcement FOA Master.doc) The applicant should be familiar with these purity specifications and ensure that the level of hydrogen purity provided by the proposed concept matches the appropriate end use (i.e., hydrogen turbines, fuel cells, modified internal combustion engines). The Department of Energy has previously defined maximum fuel contaminant specifications for components of integrated energy plants as shown in Table 1. Some hydrogen IC engines are designed to run on either gasoline or hydrogen, therefore the same levels for sulfur in gasoline (10 ppm by weight) would apply in the dual use case in order to protect the catalytic converter. Project Description: It is envisioned that several scale-up steps beginning with laboratory/bench scale R D through proof-of-concept scale prototype will result in new materials and processes to remove trace quantities of impurities such as CO, N2, S, metals, and other impurities to manufacture high purity hydrogen for a variety of applications. A combination of science, engineering and computational chemistry research is expected to be conducted depending on the level of technical maturity of the proposed materials and filtration process. The DOE is primarily interested in processes that remove all impurities, but will consider processes that remove at least two unwanted impurities, at a minimum. In addition, the DOE is NOT interested in any processes that have not been proven at laboratory scale and cannot provide data to substantiate the feasibility of the process and to warrant government funding for further development. The level of development of each advanced technology that is researched will be demonstrated in a techno-economic evaluation study to be furnished in a final topical report. Such evaluation studies shall be completed in accordance with NETL guidelines at the following NETL website: http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/quality_guidelines/main.html. Click on the quality guidelines hyperlink for further guidance on the scope and level of the required techno-economic analysis.
