Area of Interest 2 - Process Intensification: NOTE: This descriptive area provides an overview of Area of Interest 2 only. YOU MUST READ THE ENTIRE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT DOCUMENT FOR DETAILS ON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPARE AN APPLICATION UNDER AN AREA OF INTEREST. Please scroll to the bottom of this page to access the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA Master.doc). Area of Interest 2: PROCESS INTENSIFICATION Objective: This topic solicits the development of advanced technologies that offer the potential to consolidate two or more unit processes/unit operations such as gas separation processes in one module that would be integrated downstream of a coal gasification system designed to produce a pure stream of hydrogen. The objectives are to achieve higher efficiencies, lower capital costs and a smaller overall footprint that can be achieved by utilizing separate components for each required unit process/unit operation. This may include novel processes that may be located inside the gasifier as well as those located outside the gasifier to produce a syngas with high hydrogen content (greater than 70 percent by vol.). Project Description: Research applications shall be limited to the following: Perform a combination of theoretical and experimental research that will provide a scientific basis needed to develop a novel one-box process that combines synthesis gas cleanup, water-gas shift reaction, hydrogen separation and carbon dioxide separation. The selected strategy should have the potential to selectively remove pure hydrogen, carbon dioxide and synthesis gas impurities in a single reactor configuration that can operate simultaneously at high temperature and high conversion, preferably without the requirement for excess steam. The level of development of each advanced technology that is researched will be demonstrated in a techno-economic evaluation study to be furnished in a final topical report. Such evaluation studies shall be completed in accordance with NETL guidelines at the following NETL website: http://www.netl.doe.gov/publications/others/quality_guidelines/main.html. Click on the quality guidelines hyperlink for further guidance on the scope and level of the required techno-economic analysis.
