Grant Description
Approaches to improving engine efficiency aresought, built upon anunderstanding of the key losses in internal combustion engines.Thermodynamicanalyses using both ?First Law? and ?Second Law? principles are instructiveregarding the opportunities.Proposals are sought for innovative methods for reducing the losses in anyofthese categories. The irreversibilities in conventional combustion are large, yet difficulttomitigate. Approaches may include:?Alterations to the thermodynamic ?cycle? or fundamental changes to thecombustion process. Research and analysis to explain and define theselossesis acceptable, if new.?Reduction in heat transfer losses (does low-temperature combustion helphere?)?Methods to recover or utilize exhaust energy. Proposals are not soughtforcomplicated bottoming cycles.?Materials and methods for reducing friction losses. Proposals shouldfocus onfundamental understanding and enabling technologies and not enginearchitectureor component designs.
