- The goal of the GATE Program is to overcometechnology barriers preventing thedevelopment and production of cost-effective, high-efficiency vehicles fortheU.S. market and to train a future workforce of automotive engineeringprofessionals who are knowledgeable about, and experienced in, developingandcommercializing advanced automotive technologies.Proposals are sought for the establishment of new, or updating and/orexpandingexisting, Centers of Excellence which provide multidisciplinary engineeringtraining for graduate students in specific areas of advanced automotivetechnology that are technology priorities of OFCVT and/or support the goalsofthe FreedomCAR and Fuel Partnership. Award recipients will receive fundstoestablish and/or upgrade and expand course study work and laboratory worktosupport a graduate engineering degree with a focus or certificate in one ofthefollowing critical automotive technology areas:? Advanced Combustion Engines? Lightweight Materials? Advanced Energy Storage? Advanced Hybrid Propulsion and Control Systems? Fuel Cells (hydrogen energy conversion)Funding will be provided to support curriculum development and researchfellowships. The GATE Program is open to U.S. universities with accreditedgraduate engineering programs. Colleges and universities must already havesignificant experience with one or more of the desired technologies andhaveaccess to qualified personnel, laboratory facilities and equipment tosupporttheir proposed programs. The fellowship program is open to applicants whoareundertaking study and research leading to master and doctoral degrees inengineering sciences with a concentration on advanced automotivetechnologies.
