Grant Description
The mission of Problem-Solving Approaches Initiative is to improve outcomes for defendants and reduce recidivism through the collaboration between courts, law enforcement, human service organizations and community based organizations. The program goals are to: (1) improve the criminal justice systems ability to screen, assess and supervise defendants to improve outcomes for defendants; (2) utilize the authority of the criminal justice system to hold defendants accountable while linking them to appropriate, high-quality community resources and services, and (3)create a better understanding of and effective linkages between the criminal justice system , community social service organizations and public health systems. The solicitation seeks to fund projects which demonstrate and focus the energy of the criminal justice system on solving the underlying problems that bring defendants into the criminal justice system and to the Problem-Solving Approaches Initiative. The collaboration is tasked with 1) developing less costly alternatives to incarceration of non-violent defendants through an early diversion process and 2) implementing problem-solving calendars within trial courts of general or tribal jurisdictions. The problem-solving approach collaborative team will be required to go through a planning process in an effort to develop coordinated approaches, which will include key elements necessary for a successful demonstration of early diversion through pre-trial service/screening and assessment, and problem-solving court approaches as a means in reducing recidivism.
