BLM OR-WA Management and Operation of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, Medford District: The principal purposes of this assistance agreement are: 1) To meet a larger public purpose by conserving, protecting, and restoring the PCNST; protecting wild landscapes; and enhancing hiking and equestrian opportunities on the PCNST, including the natural, cultural, and scenic qualities of the associated settings on lands through which the PCNST may pass; 2) To improve public access and the quality of the hiking and equestrian use on the PCNST, and improve trail maintenance of the PCNST that will reduce environmental impacts and improve safety for hikers and equestrians; 3) To facilitate the management of the PCNST through volunteer involvement and participation, to provide meaningful and rewarding citizen stewardship opportunities to volunteers and to further the BLM¿s mission to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations; and 4) to increase youth involvement in the management and maintenance of the PCNST, and to provide stewardship training and other opportunities for young adults dedicated to the protection, preservation and promotion of the PCNST.
