Biobehavioral Research Awards for Innovative New Scientists (BRAINS) (R01): Purpose. The Biobehavioral Research Awards for Innovative New Scientists (BRAINS) award is intended to support the research and research career development of outstanding scientists who are in the early, formative stages of their careers and who plan to make a long term career commitment to research in specific mission areas of the NIMH. This award seeks to assist these individuals in launching an innovative clinical, translational, basic or services research program that holds the potential to profoundly transform the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of mental disorders. Each year the BRAINS program will focus on a specific area of research and/or research career development need. For FY 2011, the BRAINS program will focus on the research priorities and gap areas identified in the NIMH Strategic Plan (http://www.nimh.nih.gov/about/strategic-planning-reports/index.shtml). Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and is intended for early stage investigators (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-121.html). Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIMH intends to commit up to $5,000,000 in total costs to fund 7-10 new grants in FY 2011.
