Caribbean Marine Biodiversity Activity: The overall goal of the Caribbean Marine Biodiversity Activity (CMBA) is the adoption of integrated, ecosystem-based management (EBM) of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). EBM is based on a thorough understanding of the wide array of issues that impact MPAs, including social, cultural, biophysical, economic and legal dynamics. Using an integrated ecosystem approach to manage MPAs requires consideration of multiple factors such as coastal and urban development, pollution, sustainability or fishing and tourism/recreation practices, and presence of invasive species. EBM involves two changes in the way management has traditionally been practiced: (1) each human activity is managed in the context of the multiple ways it may interact with marine and coastal ecosystems, and (2) multiple activities are managed for a common outcome. Through this approach, stakeholders -- including communities, private sector, legislators, policy makers, and marine conservationists -- are engaged in improving marine biodiversity. By the end of this activity: (1) EBM will be applied in targeted MPAs and (2) the methods and approaches piloted in those locations will be socialized and disseminated more broadly among relevant stakeholders. Ultimately, EBM will result in informed decision-making and improved conservation outcomes based on social, cultural, political and environmental factors, representing a shift in the way MPAs have functioned and been managed.
