Characterizing soil organic matter quality to enhance national-scale assessments of wetland carbon sequestration: Collaboration with The Water Institute of the Gulf scientists is intended to provide a more robust understanding of soil organic carbon vulnerability in wetland soils. Studies are needed to characterize the relative content of labile and refractile soil carbon, soil C14 content, changes in C13 and N15 content and their ratios, other bulk soil properties and soil/water physicochemical properties. These properties will be linked to characteristics of microbial community composition and to soil respiration to determine vulnerability of soil carbon following long-term and short-term disturbances. These are the types of problems we wish to study in a collaborative partnership.
