Characterizing the Complications Associated with Therapeutic Blood Transfusions for Hemoglobinopathies: The purpose of this FOA is to fund a coordinating center to develop projects which will result in improved knowledge of transfusion-related complications. These projects must be specific to complications from blood transfusions, including alloimmunization, iron overload, transfusion-associated infections, and determining the utility of pre-existing datasets for analyzing information about these three areas compared to primarily collected data from study participants. The success of this approach will allow CDC to scale up monitoring of these complications to a broader population in future projects.
