Grant Description
Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to discover or validate biomarkers for well-defined human chronic kidney diseases (CKD). The purpose of this initiative is to establish a multi-center consortium to discover new and/or validate already identified biomarkers for CKD. CKD is a major public health problem in the United States and in many other industrialized countries. The prevalence of Stage 1-4 CKD in the U.S. increased from 10.0% in 1988-1994 to 13.1% in 1999-2004. The burden of kidney failure, Stage 5 CKD, in the U.S. is also substantial and costly. Prevention, management, and regression of CKD are major goals of the NIDDK.
