Clean Fuels Technology: TECHNICAL TOPIC 3 - Clean Fuels Technology(DE-PS26-05NT42317-03)This topic centers on research related to the production of premium fuelsandproducts from coal. These fuels and products, and the precursors requiredfortheir production, include diesel, jet fuel, and carbons such as pitches orcokes. In addition, technologies related to the economical production andseparation of hydrogen will be required to facilitate the use of coal formanyof these fuels and products. The fuels of the 21st century will have tosatisfy the competing demands of environmental acceptance and engineperformance. To be acceptable to the marketplace, engines must deliver therequired acceleration, horsepower, reliability, and conformance tospecifications. At the same time, cleaner burning fuels will be requiredtominimize both airborne pollutants and emission of carbon dioxide.Increasedemphasis on the control of particulate matter is likely in light of thegrowingpopularity and practicality of diesel engines. A similar set of concernsexists for jet fuels. One type of fuel currently under development andcapableof providing such qualities is a next-generation diesel fuel produced via aFischer-Tropsch (F-T) process. Novel concepts furthering this and/or otherapproaches to the development of premium fuels and products from coal aresought.ALL QUESTIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED THROUGH THE ?SUBMIT QUESTION?
