Clinical Outcomes of Live Organ Donors: - This initiative will support a consortium of investigators to conduct epidemiologic research on the outcomes and health needs of live organ donors. Research to be supported under this RFA will focus on the medical and functional outcomes of individuals who have donated a kidney or a lobe of lung for transplantation. - In FY 2006, the NIAID and the NHLBI anticipate awarding a total of $2.1 million to establish this new research program. - Two to three awards to Clinical Centers and one award to a Data Coordinating Center are anticipated. - This initiative will be funded using the single-project Cooperative Agreement (U01) mechanism. - Eligible organizations include for-profit and non-profit organizations; public or private institutions such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories; units of State or local governments; and faith-based or community-based organizations. Only domestic institutions may apply. - Eligible principal investigators (PIs) include individuals with expertise in organ transplantation and epidemiologic research. - Each applicant PI may submit one application. An institution may submit two applications providing that one is for a Clinical Center and the other for a Data Coordinating Center; however, an individual may not appear as key personnel on more than one application. - Applications must be prepared using the PHS 398 research grant application. Eligible agencies of the Federal Government are eligible to apply. Applications may be submitted by individual institutions or by consortia of institutions that have pooled their resources in order to be responsive to the terms of this RFA. Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply as the primary institution, but may enter into a consortium or subcontract with a domestic institution as the primary applicant.
