- Grant Description
- Purpose. This FOA issued by the National Institute on Aging encourages Clinical Trial Planning Grant (R34) applications to develop research protocols for Phase III and IV clinical trials related to critical illness and injury in aging. The planning grant mechanism is intended to permit early peer review of the rationale and design of the proposed Phase III or IV clinical trial, and to support development of a research team, tools for data management and research oversight, recruitment strategies, detailed protocol and Manual of Procedures (MOP), and other essential components necessary for a competitive clinical trial application. This FOA is NOT designed for collecting preliminary data or conducting pilot studies in support of the scientific rationale for a clinical trial. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the Clinical Trial Planning Grant (R34) mechanism and runs in parallel with PA-10-042, that encourages applications under the R01 Research Project grant mechanism, PA-10-043, that encourages applications under the R03 Small Research Grant mechanism, and PA-10-044, that encourages applications under the R21 Exploratory/Developmental grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
