- Improving the security of our nation's drinking water and wastewater infrastructure has become a top priority since the events of 9/11/01. Significant actions are underway to assess and reduce vulnerabilities to potential terrorist attacks; to plan for and practice responses to emergencies and incidents; to develop new security technologies; to detect and monitor contaminants and prevent security breaches; and to enhance the capability and capacity of the nations laboratories to continually improve their effectiveness and efficiency in analyzing a surge of potentially contaminated environmental samples.
