Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU), Rocky Mountain CESU: The US Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK), is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner to design and develop an energy harvesting tag (EHT) capable of integrating with the U.S. weather radar network. Ideally, the Center would like to work with a graduate student for faculty member who will design and develop the EHT in a laboratory setting. Testing of the EHT performance will occur through attaching the EHT to a USGS operated UAV to fly trials within an existing radar network. Upon completion of testing, evaluation and remediation of system limitations will occur through comparison of positional data from the radar network and the UAV GPS. The evaluation metrics will most likely involve signal strength, detection range, and location accuracy. Development of technological fixes for the identified system limitation will occur. The cycle of testing, evaluation and remediation of system limitations will continue until the EHT is refined and improved for operational missions.
