Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU), Southern Appalachian CESU: The purpose of the U.S. Geological Surveys Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) funding opportunity is to conduct research on formal and informal trail impact monitoring at Acadia National Park Mt. Desert Island. The objective is to: (1) conduct an inventory and assessment of resource conditions on a large sample of formal (official) and develop procedures to assess the number, distribution and conditions of informal (visitor-created) trails, and (2) experimentally apply and evaluate selected educational and site management actions to reduce off-trail traffic and trampling damage in a backcountry setting, and (3) develop and apply procedures to monitor vegetation and soil loss related to visitor trampling in off-trail locations on the summit of Cadillac Mountain. Resource degradation along trails is an inevitable consequence of visitor use. Even low levels of trampling disturbance reduce ground vegetation height, cover, and biomass, and may alter species composition by eliminating fragile species. Higher levels of trampling cause more complete ground vegetation loss and compositional change. Concentrated traffic also pulverizes organic leaf litter and underlying soils, which then become vulnerable to erosion and compaction. USGS funding for this project was provided under the Natural Resources Preservation Program, which supports research on topics of high priority to the National Park Service. The primary objective of this project is to provide information products that will focus and improve the effectiveness of management programs for sustaining visitor use while minimizing associated impacts to park natural resources and processes.
