Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Californian CESU: The US Geological Survey is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for applying radiocarbon (14C) techniques to detect old carbon assimilation in nearshore marine ecosystems given the possibility that permafrost degradation and erosion may allow for old carbon delivery via freshwater discharge to Arctic marine environment. Climate warming is accelerating erosion and thawing of frozen ground (i.e., permafrost), leading to a myriad of changes in physical and chemical conditions throughout the Arctic with the potential to modify food webs.
