Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Chesapeake Watershed CESU: The purpose of the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) funding opportunity is to study wild waterfowl movements in relation to potential transmission risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1. The role wild birds play in the spread of this disease is still greatly debated. We propose using satellite telemetry to determine timing, movements, and habitat use of wild bird migration within the zone of infection (China). Spatial and temporal analysis of tracking data will be coupled with poultry occurrence and other disease risk factors to develop a model of H5N1 transmission risk which can eventually be applied to yet uninfected areas such as the United States, and Chesapeake Bay region. PWRC conducts research in support of natural resources management in the Chesapeake Bay region, nationally, and internationally. PWRC produces and disseminates scientific information needed for decision-making in collaboration with Federal and State land management agencies, Native American tribes, academic institutions and organizations. Since 1936, PWRC has funded projects that advance the Center in producing strong and unbiased scientific information necessary for decision making. PWRC will continue to support such projects.
