Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Colorado Plateau CESU: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) wishes to enter into agreement with a CESU partner for technical assistance with Salton Sea Air Basin scientific investigations. As part of this agreement the recipient is requested to provide a subject matter expert to assist the State of California and USGS by actively participating as a member of the Salton Sea Air quality technical Focus Group. The purpose of this group is to design and implement an integrated air quality monitoring program that will effectively document current air quality conditions and trends in the Salton Sea air basin and provide a sound scientifically defensible plan for documenting changes in air quality for the future. Members of this group currently include representatives from federal (EPA), State Air Resources Board), and local (Imperial County and Imperial Irrigation District) agencies. Included in this effort will be providing oral and written comments in review of specific proposed plans. Assistance is also needed in direct efforts to monitoring air quality conditions in and around the Salton Sea and potentially areas that could be impacted the transport of particle due to high wind events. As part of this effort, the application of remote sensing techniques and the interpretation of stream hydrographs and other specialized work may be required. The recipient also is requested to provide a subject matter expert to actively participate as a member of the scientific team planning and conducting seismic and bathymetric surveys of the Salton Sea. As part of this effort, bottom surface elevation and a classification of the substrate will be determined. Review and assistance with efforts to process existing bathymetric data also will be needed. As a team member, the expert will be expected to constructively and effectively interact with researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California-Riverside, University of California-Davis, State of California Department of Fish and Game and Water Resources, and the USGS in the interdisciplinary application of research and problem-solving methods. Research assistance also is needed in the design and implementation of landscape-scale monitoring of the Salton Sea Ecosystem including imagery mapping of existing shoreline, wetting detection, and potential cursing of plays using remote sensing and other application techniques.
