Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Great Lakes Northern Forests CESU: The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner to participate in a collaborative team effort to study Lake Ontario nearshore nutrient dynamics as part of the Lake Ontario 2018 Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI) year. The U.S.-Canada Lake Ontario Lakewide Action and Management Plan (https://www.epa.gov/greatlakes/lake-ontario#lamps) has identified nearshore nutrient monitoring and research as one of its highest science priorities to inform a binational re-evaluation of Lake Ontarioâ¿¿s current nutrient loading targets (Attachment 1). New York lists Lake Ontarioâ¿¿s shoreline between the Niagara River and the Genesee River as impaired due to excessive growth of benthic algae. Measurements of Cladophora nutrient content, biomass, seasonal growth rates, and related light (PAR), temperature and other related conditions, are needed to support the development of Lake Ontario Cladophora growth models and nutrient transport models.
