Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Great Rivers CESU: The US Geological Survey Columbia Environmental Research Center, is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner to conduct research on ¿Informing a conservation strategy for freshwater mussels in the Buffalo River: Evaluating mussel population trends and potential effects of elevated nitrogen on mussel recruitment.¿ The objectives of this research are: 1) review and evaluation existing water quality monitoring data, 2) conduct laboratory toxicity testing of water and sediment from the Buffalo river using native mussels, 3) conduct caged mussel studies on the Buffalo river, and 4) mussel survey and comparison in the Buffalo river. Results from the studies proposed here can be applied to other systems across the NPS and Department of The Interior.
