Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, North and West Alaska CESU: freshwater invasive species to target for early detection and prevention by evaluating current and future habitat suitability and potential transport to freshwater habitats across Alaska. Climate warming and the accelerating rates of invasions from human activities have elevated the need to address questions of invasive ecology for Subarctic and Arctic ecosystems. Climate warming is facilitating the establishment of invasive species by creating suitable conditions for species from lower latitudes, thereby expanding their potential ranges into northern latitudes. Human activities are increasing the number of pathways and transportation rates of potentially invasive species, resulting in higher numbers of introductions for Subarctic and Arctic ecosystems. The risk posed by the synergistic combination of climate warming and rates of introductions is substantial in freshwater ecosystems of the Subarctic and Arctic such as Alaska.
