Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Pacific Northwest CESU: The US Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK), is offering a funding opportunity to investigate the population structure of the bacterium Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (Movi) in small ruminant reservoir hosts and in bighorn sheep affected by epizootic bronchopneumonia across the western US. This work will include generating whole genome sequences of 12 Movi strains from diverse geographical and host sources. The goal will be to utilize MLST method to investigate the population structure in its reservoir (domestic sheep) and spillover (bighorn sheep) hosts. This data enable molecular epidemiologic investigation of the transmission and persistence of Movi in bighorn sheep, which is essential for development of effective management strategies for controlling the disease and promoting the re-establishment of this species.
