Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Piedmont-South Atlantic Coast CESU: The USGS Carolinas Coastal Change Processes Project is a five year effort focused on the region of North and South Carolina. This project will investigate the interactions of shoreline, nearshore, and offshore sediment transport process driving coastal change in the Carolinas using geophysical surveys, oceanographic studies, and predictive models. In support of this project we seek technical assistance for field observational studies to measure physical oceanographic processes and for the development and implementation of numerical models used to hindcast and predict coastal changes. Observational assistance is sought to measure near-bed (seafloor) bottom boundary layer sediment resuspension processes. The use of acoustic instrumentation is required, mounted on oceanographic quality tripods suitable for these studies and able to carry a number of instrumentation, and the ability to provide calibration of the acoustic equipment in a proven facility. Technical assistance with the numerical modeling is sought to provide a calibration of the model results compared to the observational data. Award Information The award will be monetary support to provide direct assistance in the deployment, maintenance, operation, calibration, processing, and interpretation of measured time series data from a multi-frequency acoustic backscatter profiler designed to measure vertical profiles of near-bottom (seafloor) suspended sediment. The applicant will perform qualified calibrations of the multi-frequency acoustic profiler in a proven facility. Funding now available is $35,000. Additional years will be based upon satisfactory progress and the availability of funds.
