Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Rocky Mountain CESU: The National Geospatial Program Office of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a Cooperative Agreement to one member university of the Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit (CESU) Program. The project is titled "Development of a Wyoming Imagery Service". Remotely sensed data, including ortho imagery, is an important element in providing high-quality science relevant to environmental and resource management agencies. Aside from the cost of obtaining the data, researchers are faced with the technological challenges of download, archive, and incorporation of the data into their projects that are due mainly to the enormity of the image files. The need for a service that allows researchers to overcome these technological challenges by making the imagery easy to obtain, in a compressed file format and free of charge, is essential. The objective of this project is to research and develop an interface/service that allows researchers to discover and obtain large images and incorporate them into projects. Included will be the development of an indexing system that provides easy discovery of the image files. Because of the large size of these images, the data will require compression in order to make it available in a size acceptable for download by the scientific and general user communities. Technical assistance to researchers on use of the system will be provided by the developers of the interface/service. Elements to be accomplished through this cooperative agreement: . Research and development of an interface that allows researchers to discover and access large imagery files . Compression algorithm applied to data to allow for acceptable download size . Indexing and loading of imagery . Attainment of storage device and/or server to accommodate at least 1.5 terrabytes of space for imagery . Provision of technical assistance to researchers The USGS will provide the 2006 NAIP imagery to be compressed, indexed and incorporated into the service. The interface to the service will be published to Geospatial One Stop (GOS). This project will supplement and add perspective to the USGS mission of providing the nation with data that can be used to better manage the nations lands. Assistance to resource managers and the public relates directly to this goal and the creation and maintenance of effective partnerships among federal agencies and universities to share resources and expertise is inherent in the process. The no-cost availability of one meter resolution ortho-imagery, in a format that is easily downloadable, will open doors for its use by more environmental and resource management researchers; thus, providing more high-quality science to decision makers.
