Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Rocky Mountain CESU: The purpose of the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NoRock) funding opportunity is to develop and maintain the first comprehensive database of grizzly bears in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem of northwestern Montana. Unlike the Yellowstone Ecosystem, no single data repository exists in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem. Instead, numerous federal, state and tribal agencies involved with bear management each have their own system for recording and managing data that may or may not be directly compatible with other agencies. One way to maximize the accuracy and usefulness of data relating to the research and management of this threatened population is to standardize and centralize its collection. Standardizing what data are collected and housing everything in a single database will allow managers to query records across agencies, and will allow supervision of data quality that will ultimately aid in monitoring recovery efforts. The Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NoRock) is part of the biological resources division of the U.S. Geological Survey. Scientists from the Center work in the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States and throughout the western U.S. Many of our scientists work throughout the world on issues as diverse as global climate change, wildlife diseases, bison ecology, and large carnivores. We work with partners from the Department of the Interior including the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. We also work in collaboration with state resource agencies throughout the western United States and other federal agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service. We are hosted by Montana State University where we jointly co-sponsor the Mountain Prairie Information Network as part of a national information network to provide timely natural resource information. Since 2001, NoRock has funded projects that advance the Center in producing strong and unbiased scientific information necessary for decision making. NoRock will continue to support such projects.
