Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Rocky Mountain CESU: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research on the economic value of ecosystem services supported by dryland and grassland environments. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) within the Department of the Interior (DOI) manages vast stretches of grasslands and drylands throughout the western United States, but the value of the services they provide is relatively understudied in the economics literature. To support this information need, a stated preference nonmarket valuation method will be combined with a survey to monetize the economic value of the ecosystem services provided by drylands and grasslands managed by the BLM and other DOI partners. Results are anticipated to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the economic costs and benefits of land management of grassland and dryland ecosystem services.
