Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Souther Appalachian Mountains CESU: This opportunity provides funding for analysis of laboratory DNA/RNA sequence data for transcriptome assembly for multiple invertebrate and vertebrate taxonomic groups and for multiple species within taxonomic groups. Expertise is needed for the following biological data analysis fields: microarrays, splice variants, SNPs, cis-elements, and miRNAs. Assistance is needed with application of advanced techniques in contemporary data mining to identify gene models, assignment of gene names, classification of paralogous families, alignment to sequences in related species and gene ontology. This will likely include experience with relational databases, SQL queries and UNIX. Experience with the scripting language PERL will also be required. Those providing assistance will be expected to be familiar with experimental research design, and software used to study data generated from multiple approaches to gene expression profiling. Assistance will be required for a full cycle of microarray data analysis projects with public, licensed and in-house bioinformatics tools. Those providing assistance will be expected to interact with other world-class bioinformatics analysts/engineers, molecular biologists, immunologists, statisticians and computer programmers. Assistance is requested in setting up automated systems for processing of very large volumes of primary and derived data, data mining, statistical analysis, and for reporting of results. Those providing the required assistance will be expected to work closely with the Principal Investigator on troubleshooting, assist in implementing laboratory quality control measures, and assess results accordingly. Those providing assistance will benefit by close professional collaboration and increased opportunities for an interdisciplinary research project related to federal resource management issues surrounding the identification of ecological and evolutionary processes impacting threatened and endangered or invasive species.
