Criminal Justice and Litigation Skill Building: Supporting Consolidation of Mexico's Accusatorial Criminal Justice System (ACJS): BACKGROUNDU.S. international drug and crime assistance. INL's technical support is tailored to bolster capacities of partner countries through multilateral, regional, and country-specific programs.The Merida Initiative is an unprecedented partnership between the United States and Mexico to fight organized crime and associated violence while furthering respect for human rights and the rule of law. Based on principles of shared responsibility, mutual trust, and respect for sovereign independence, the two countries' efforts have built confidence that is transforming the bilateral relationship.Under the Merida Initiative, the United States has forged strong partnerships to support Mexico's efforts towards implementation of oral, adversarial criminal justice reforms at the federal and state levels.Ultimately, this project should support the goals of the INL ROL Criminal Prosecutions Program. The primary goal of the INL ROL Program is to ensure Mexico implements a sustainable and transparent accusatorial criminal justice system nationwide and, over the long term, to reinforce the rule of law in Mexico to reduce impunity, support human rights, and significantly enhance Mexico's ability to bring transnational criminal organizations to justice.PROJECT PURPOSEThis project will support the Embassy Mexico City/INL ROL Criminal Prosecutions Program by providing Mexican law students and professors an opportunity to develop litigation skills for working in and teaching the ACJS. This will be done by delivering litigation workshops, providing training/study tours to the United States and organizing an international conference on law schools' role in the consolidation of the ACJS.PROJECT GOALSThe goal of this grant is to support Mexico's consolidation of the ACJS by providing Mexican law students and professors an opportunity to develop the skills required to operate and teach in the ACJS.
