Grant Description
Purpose. This FOA encourages Exploratory/Developmental research grant applications proposing to study mechanisms and management of critical illness and injury in aging. Studies may be mechanistic, observational, or interventional in nature. Secondary analyses of existing datasets, such as from large observational studies or clinical trials, may be proposed. Animal studies are appropriate in cases where human studies are not feasible. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Exploratory/Developmental grant mechanism (R21) and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-10-042, that encourages applications under the R01 Research Project grant mechanism, and PA-10-043, that encourages applications under the R03 Small Research grant mechanism. This FOA also runs in parallel with an FOA of similar scientific scope, PA-10-045, which encourages applications under the R34 clinical trial planning grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism, numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
