DOD FY04 Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Physician Research Training Award (PRT).: There is an urgent need to train physicians as prostate cancer researchers. Physician-scientists are a critical resource to the field because their training as physicians can provide both disease-oriented and patient-oriented approaches toward prostate cancer research. However, the competing demands for a physician's time made by patient care and teaching responsibilities required by the institutions leave little time for recently trained physicians to pursue independent research careers. The intent of the Physician Research Training Award is to address the critical shortage of physicians performing prostate cancer research and to foster their training toward becoming independent researchers. This award is designed to provide a mentored training experience that will prepare physicians who are in the last year of graduate medical education or fellowships, or within the first 3 years of their appointment as an Assistant Professor or equivalent. A training program appropriate to the area of study must be part of the application, and may include coursework and seminars that will provide the Principal Investigator (PI) with experience in key areas such as statistics, bioethics, and/or relevant basic science disciplines within his or her area of research interest. Key elements of this award are the involvement of a mentor with an established research program in prostate cancer research and the aggressive protection of the PI's time to be devoted to research (50% effort). The PI must also demonstrate an ongoing commitment to prostate cancer research. Physicians with research interests in basic, translational, or population-based fields are encouraged to apply for this award. All proposed research must explicitly state how the area of research contributes to the goal of conquering prostate cancer and/or advancing the field of prostate cancer research. Physician Research Training Award proposals should include a discussion of the level of institutional commitment and infrastructure support that will foster the applicant's prostate cancer research career as reflected by (1) the extent the applicant will be relieved of his or her academic, clinical, and/or other responsibilities to have additional time for research; (2) the provision of adequate laboratory facilities and equipment, and availability of additional research funding to support the applicant; and (3) the opportunities for critical professional interaction with senior colleagues with established research activities. A letter of support from the institution must be included as part of the proposal.
