Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2005 (FY05) Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Era of Hope Scholar Award (EHSA): The United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) invites applications for funding for the BCRP FY05 Era of Hope Scholar Award (EHSA). The Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) is once again offering the Era of Hope Scholar Award to identify individuals with high potential for innovation in breast cancer research early in their careers. Candidates for this award should be exceptionally talented, early-career scientists who have demonstrated that they are the best and brightest in their field(s) through extraordinary creativity, vision, and productivity. They should also exhibit strong potential for leadership in the breast cancer research community that supports a vision for the eradication of breast cancer. These individuals should challenge current dogma and demonstrate an ability to look beyond tradition and convention. Award recipients will be expected to successfully challenge the status quo through creative, high-risk research that may lead ultimately to the eradication of breast cancer. Applicants must be nominated to be considered for this award; self-nominations will be accepted. Selected nominees whose qualifications meet the awards intent will be invited to prepare a complete proposal. The Era of Hope Scholar Award recognizes the talents and accomplishments of highly qualified individuals; therefore the complete proposal must focus on the candidates emerging record of creative and original accomplishments and potential for leadership in the field. Experience in breast cancer is not a requirement; however, the proposal must focus on breast cancer and the applicant must commit a minimum of 50 percent effort during the award period to breast cancer research. Approximately $20M is available to fund FY05 BCRP Era of Hope Scholar Awards. It is anticipated that approximately five proposals will be funded depending on the number and quality of the proposals. Funding for Era of Hope Scholar Awards can be requested for a maximum of $2.5M in direct costs plus indirect costs, as appropriate, for up to a 5 year performance period. Estimated timelines for the FY05 proposals are as follows: Nomination deadline: April 5, 2005, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. After nominations have been screened, invitations to prepare an Era of Hope Scholar Award proposal will be sent to selected applicants no later than May 2005. Do not submit an Era of Hope Scholar Award proposal unless you receive a letter of invitation. Invited Full Proposal Submission Deadline: July 26, 2005, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Electronic submission is required. Proposals will be accepted only as PDF files submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt system. The CDMRP uses a two-tier review process for proposals: scientific peer review, followed by programmatic review. Details of both tiers of review can be found in the Full Text of Program Announcement.
