Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06) Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Health Disparity Research Award.: The intent of the Health Disparity Research Award is to encourage and support investigators who focus their research efforts on the disparity of prostate cancer within an affected population or community. Appropriate disparity focus areas include, but are not limited to, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, access to health care, insurance status, age, geography, and cultural beliefs. Applicants who do not have experience in prostate cancer research or a connection to, or effectiveness in working with, an affected population or community are strongly encouraged to include a collaborator (or collaborators) with the appropriate prostate cancer or health disparity research experience. The ultimate goal of these awards is to resolve the health disparity in prostate cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality. The research team must demonstrate experience in prostate cancer research and a connection to, or effectiveness in working with, the affected population or community. Such connection(s) may include: " Being a member of the affected population or community with a demonstrated commitment to the affected population or community; " Having experience working with the affected population or community; or " Having interactions with or an active membership in organizations such as the Urban League, National Medical Association, National Alliance for Hispanic Health, American Indian Health Care Association, and National Rural Health Association. In addition, the proposal must explicitly state how the proposed research is related to a health disparity focus area in prostate cancer.
