Department of Defense (DoD) Prostate Cancer Research Program Synergistic Idea Development Award: The Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Synergistic Idea Development Award supports innovative, high impact approaches to prostate cancer research involving up to three independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) investigators who address a central problem or question in prostate cancer research from synergistic and complementary perspectives. The overall goal of this award is to accelerate advances in prostate cancer research to support the PCRP goal of conquering prostate cancer. The Synergistic Idea Development Award requires that investigators collaborate to submit a single proposal. Each partner will be recognized as a Principal Investigator (PI), and each will receive an individual award. The proposal must be supported by the unique expertise of each PI, and must clearly define the synergistic components that will facilitate and accelerate progress in a way that could not be accomplished through independent efforts. Multidisciplinary and multi-institutional projects are allowed. If the project is multi-institutional, PIs should include plans for communication and real-time data transfer between investigators at each institution. Additionally, participating institutions must be willing to resolve potential intellectual and material property issues and to remove institutional barriers that might interfere with achieving high levels of cooperation to ensure the successful completion of this award.A Scientific Management Plan, Synergy Statement, Innovation Statement, and Impact Statement are required for all proposals (see Appendix 3).The PCRP seeks proposals from all areas of laboratory, preclinical, behavioral, and epidemiological research that are centered on the Fiscal Year 2007 (FY07) PCRP areas of programmatic interest; these areas are described in detail in Section III. Clinical trials may be submitted to this mechanism. All submissions proposing a clinical trial must also submit a clinical protocol (see Appendix 7).Important aspects of this award are as follows: 1. Synergy: Synergy is a significant feature of these proposals. These awards should accelerate research progress through real-time communication and problem solving that approach the research problem from a variety of perspectives. The combined efforts of each PI should result in a level of productivity that is greater than that achievable by each PI working independently. Contributions to the synergy of this mechanism are expected to be balanced among all investigators unless otherwise justified. It should be clear that all investigators have an equal level of intellectual input into the proposed project. The PIs past history of collaborative study will also be evaluated. 2. Innovation: Innovation is also a significant feature of this award. Innovative research may represent a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, or look at existing problems from new perspectives. It is the responsibility of each PI to clearly and explicitly articulate how the proposed research is innovative. Proposals may be innovative in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to the following:. Study concept - investigation of a novel idea and/or unique research question that has the potential to advance the field of prostate cancer research in a significant way.. Research method or technology - use of novel research methods or new technologies to address a research question that could not be addressed using conventional methods/techniques.. Adaptations of existing methods or technologies - application or adaptation of existing methods or technologies for research or clinical purposes that are fundamentally different from those originally intended, and/or for use in novel research or clinical purposes.Conversely, research that is an extension or an incremental advance upon published data is not innovative, and will not be considered for funding under this mechanism.3. Impact: Research that has high impact may significantly advance current methods, concepts, prevention, detection, diagnosis, or treatment of prostate cancer. It is the responsibility of the PIs to clearly and explicitly articulate the impact the proposed research may have on the field of prostate cancer research.4. Preliminary Data: All Synergistic Idea Development Award proposals must include preliminary data relevant to prostate cancer research and the proposed project.5. PI Experience: This award mechanism is designed to accommodate multiple PIs. Therefore, each PI must demonstrate that he or she possesses the research experience to function as a PI in a synergistic project involving collaborations among equals as well as an appropriate level of authority and responsibility to direct the project supported by the grant.
