Department of Defense(DoD) Breast Cancer Research Program(BCRP) Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Award: The overall goal of the FY06 BCRP is to promote research focused on eradicating breast cancer. Therefore, the BCRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for, address neglected issues in, and bring new investigators to the field of breast cancer research. The BCRP focuses its funding on innovative projects, particularly those involving multidisciplinary and/or multi-institutional collaborations and alliances that have the potential to make a significant impact on breast cancer. Projects that address underinvestigated avenues of research or novel applications of existing technologies are strongly encouraged. The BCRP encourages risk-taking research; however, all projects must demonstrate solid scientific judgment and rationale. The BCRPs objective within this context is to fund a balanced portfolio of scientifically meritorious research related to all aspects of breast cancer. The BCRP seeks proposals from all areas of laboratory, clinical, behavioral, and epidemiologic research, including all disciplines within the basic, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, sociocultural, and environmental sciences, nursing; occupational health, alternative therapies, public health and policy, ethics, and economics. Proposals that address the needs of minority, low-income, rural, and other underrepresented and/or medically underserved populations are strongly encouraged. The Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Award enables exceptionally talented recent medical or other doctoral degree graduates to obtain significant experience in at least two disparate disciplines so that they may more effectively pursue an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Proposals should emphasize a multidisciplinary training program in which two or more major disciplines are integrated into a common research and training environment. For this award, major disciplines include, but are not limited to: Biological sciences (including both basic and clinical sciences); Chemical sciences; Social and behavioral sciences; Engineering, physical, and mathematical sciences; and Public health research. It is the responsibility of the applicant to clearly and explicitly articulate how the proposed disciplines are distinct and how the applicant will be an active participant in research involving each discipline. Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Award proposals should significantly increase the candidates expertise by including training and/or experience in at least two different disciplines and should broaden the scope of the candidates ongoing research to include an interdisciplinary approach to breast cancer under the guidance of the designated mentors. The multidisciplinary training program should offer a well-rounded, integrated experience in more than one approach to breast cancer research. A primary mentor must be designated who will oversee the postdoctoral fellows research and training and additional mentors must be identified for each additional discipline area. A diverse, well-qualified faculty should be available to provide suitable training opportunities within a multidisciplinary research framework. Each mentor should play a significant role in the postdoctoral fellows training and research. All mentors should work together as a leadership team under the primary mentors oversight to promote a team-oriented, multidisciplinary training experience for the postdoctoral fellow. Mentors may be from the same or different institutions. If the proposal is multi-institutional, letters of support from all participating institutions must be included in the proposal. The research project must be multidisciplinary, incorporating aspects of each major discipline for which a mentor is named. The research focus of the proposal must address an issue relevant to breast cancer biology, etiology, prevention, detection, diagnosis, and/or therapy and be highly innovative, with the potential for making a significant impact on breast cancer. The research should be of sufficient depth to produce publications relevant to the disciplines of each of the mentors. Eligible applicants should have been in the laboratory or research setting in which this research is to be performed for no more than 2 years at the time of proposal submission and should have less than 5 years total of postdoctoral research experience (excluding clinical residency or fellowship training). All recipients of the Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Award will meet annually with recipients of the Innovator, Era of Hope Scholar, and Era of Hope Postdoctoral Awards; the BCRP IP; and CDMRP program staff for the purpose of open scientific communication and mutual benefit. The CDMRP expects to allot approximately $10 M of the $127.5 M FY06 BCRP appropriation to fund approximately 20 Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Awards, depending on the quality and number of proposals received. Funding for Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Awards can be requested for up to $150,000 per year for direct costs. The performance period may be requested for up to 3 years. The maximum funding for a 3-year performance period is $450,000 for direct costs. In addition, indirect costs should be added as appropriate. Proposals for projects requiring lower levels of funding may also be submitted. These funds can cover salary, tuition, research supplies, equipment, and travel to scientific/technical meetings. The nature of the BCRP does not allow for renewal of grants or supplementation of existing grants. The amount allotted for the postdoctoral fellows salary/stipend is $53,000 for the first year, $55,000 for the second year, and $57,000 for the third year. This money must be used toward the salary of the trainee but may be supplemented by other sources, as appropriate. Estimated timelines for the FY06 BCRP Multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Award are as follows: On-line letters of intent are due by, April 25, 2006, 5:00 p.m. Eastern time and Proposal Submission is due May 23, 2006, 5:00 p.m. Eastern time. Electronic submission is required. Proposal will be accepted only as PDF files submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt system. The CDMRP uses a two tier review process for proposals: scientific peer review, followed by programmatic review. Details of both tiers of review can be found in the full text of the Program Announcement. Applicants should submit questions as early as possible. Every effort will be made to answer questions within 5 working days.
