Department of Defense(DoD) Breast Cancer Research Program(BCRP) Synergistic Idea Award: The overall goal of the FY06 BCRP is to promote research focused on eradicating breast cancer. Therefore, the BCRP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for, address neglected issues in, and bring new investigators to the field of breast cancer research. The BCRP focuses its funding on innovative projects, particularly those involving multidisciplinary and/or multi-institutional collaborations and alliances that have the potential to make a significant impact on breast cancer. Projects that address underinvestigated avenues of research or novel applications of existing technologies are strongly encouraged. The BCRP encourages risk-taking research; however, all projects must demonstrate solid scientific judgment and rationale. The BCRPs objective within this context is to fund a balanced portfolio of scientifically meritorious research related to all aspects of breast cancer. The BCRP seeks proposals from all areas of laboratory, clinical, behavioral, and epidemiologic research, including all disciplines within the basic, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, sociocultural, and environmental sciences, nursing; occupational health, alternative therapies, public health and policy, ethics, and economics. Proposals that address the needs of minority, low-income, rural, and other underrepresented and/or medically underserved populations are strongly encouraged. The Synergistic Idea Award supports innovative, high-risk/high-reward breast cancer research collaborations between two independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) investigators who address a central problem or question in breast cancer research from synergistic and complementary perspectives. The Synergistic Idea Award requires the submission of a single proposal addressing a critical problem in breast cancer research. The proposal may be structured as either two separate but complementary and highly synergistic objectives, or as a balanced and synergistic collaboration integrated into a single project. Proposals must be supported by the unique expertise of two independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) investigators and must clearly define the synergistic components that will enable or greatly accelerate the testing of a single innovative hypothesis. Multi-institutional and/or multidisciplinary proposals are encouraged but not required. Funding for a Synergistic Idea Award can be requested for up to $250,000 per year for direct costs. The performance period may be requested for up to 2 years. The maximum funding for a 2-year performance period is $500,000 in direct costs. In addition, indirect costs should be added as appropriate. Proposals for projects requiring lower levels of funding may also be submitted. Funds can cover salary, research supplies, clinical costs, equipment, and travel to scientific/technical meetings. For the Synergistic Idea Award, the two collaborating investigators are expected to be equal partners in the proposal; therefore, funding should be divided accordingly unless otherwise warranted and clearly justified. The nature of the BCRP does not allow for renewal of grants or supplementation of existing grants. The CDMRP expects to allot approximately $16 M of the $127.5 M FY06 BCRP appropriation to fund approximately 21 Synergistic Idea Awards, depending on the quality and number of proposals received. Estimated timelines for the FY06 BCRP Synergistic Idea Award are as follows: Online Letter of Intent due by April 25, 2006 and proposal submission due by May 23, 2006, 5:00 p.m. Eastern time. Electronic submission is required. Proposal will be accepted only as PDF files submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt system. The CDMRP uses a two tier review process for proposals: scientific peer review, followed by programmatic review. Details of both tiers of review can be found in the full text of the Program Announcement. Applicants should submit questions as early as possible. Every effort will be made to answer questions within 5 working days.
