Design and Analysis of Genome-wide Association Studies: - The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to develop and test innovative, informative, and cost-effective study designs and analytical strategies to perform genome-wide association studies on diseases such as those affecting the heart, lung, blood, and sleep. The strategies and tools obtained from this effort will contribute to the use of genome-wide association studies to understand the role of human genetic variation in health and disease. - The NHLBI intends to commit total costs of $1,800,000 in Fiscal Year 2006 and $5.4 million over three years to fund 5-6 new grants. The NIEHS intends to commit total costs of $500,000 in Fiscal Year 2006 and $1.5 million over three years to fund 1-2 new grants. The NIGMS intends to commit total costs of $300,000 in Fiscal Year 2006 and $0.9 million over three years to fund one new grant. The NHGRI will conduct the peer review of applications and assist in the overall management if the program. - It is anticipated that there will be up to nine awards. - An applicant may request a project period of up to three years and a budget for direct costs up to $200,000 per year. - This funding opportunity will use the NIH Cooperative Agreement (U01) award mechanism. - Eligible organizations include domestic for-profit or non-profit organizations, public or private institutions (e.g., universities, colleges, hospitals), units of state and local governments, eligible agencies of the federal government, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Eligible agencies of the Federal Government are eligible to apply. Foreign institutions are eligible to apply. An applicant's failure to meet an eligibility criterion by the time of an application deadline will result in the return of the application without review or, even though the application may be reviewed, will preclude the agency from making an award. Collaborators at foreign institutions are allowed.
