Desolation Canyon National Historic Landmark Cultural Resource Partnership: The objective is to continue the Desolation Canyon Cultural Resource Partnership, which is a coalition that includes the Bureau of Land Management, the University of Utah, the Utah Division of State History and the private non-profit Colorado Plateau Archaeological Alliance (CPAA), all of which are committed to the long-term protection and preservation of historic and archaeological resources in the Desolation Canyon NHL. The intent of the partnership is to formally and thoroughly document cultural sites in selected portions of the 90-mile-long NHL, to provide baseline conditions for future monitoring, to determine which sites are being impacted by river visitors and to what extent, to develop strategies to better assist federal land managers in monitoring ongoing damage to sites, to foster rangers in proper site documentation techniques that will augment baseline data needed for future management decisions.FY 2008 efforts will be focused on those areas of the canyon identified by the BLM as being at greatest risk to impacts. All research will be conducted to Secretary of Interior standards and under federal permits issued to CPAA. All areas to be investigated are on federal lands within the NHL that are currently managed by the BLM.
