Grant Description
FY 2006 Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program: The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) announces the availability of grants to support the FY 2006 Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. BJA will determine the number of grants based on available resources, the number of submissions received the criteria set forth in this solicitation, and other considerations. These grants will be determined through a competitive application process. The purposes of this grant solicitation are: 1.) to fund projects that will enhance the capacity of regulatory and law enforcement agencies to collect and analyze controlled substance prescription drug data; and 2.) To fund projects that will provide help to states that want to establish a prescription drug monitoring program. The maximum award for establishing a new program or enhancing an existing program - will be $400,000 for a minimum grant period of 24 months. The maximum award for planning a prescription drug monitoring program is $50,000 for a minimum grant period of 15 months.Prescription drug monitoring programs are systems where controlled substance dispensing data is submitted to a centralized database administered by an authorized state agency. These programs are designed to prevent and detect the diversion and abuse of pharmaceutically controlled substances, particularly at the retail level where no automated information collection system exists. The increased efficiency of prescription drug monitoring programs allows for the early detection of abuse trends and possible sources of diversion. The analysis of collected data also allows for the identification of outmoded prescribing practices, such as the under-treatment of pain, which may result in the development of educational programs for medical professionals.
