Grant Description: Purpose. The purpose of this announcement is to describe areas of research of particular interest to the National Institute on Aging. This FOA seeks to promote research that develops, characterizes, refines and enhances model systems for aging research, including but not limited to animal models, cell lines, and informatics.This FOA issued by the National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications that propose to: characterize aging at the physiological, biochemical and functional levels in existing animal models, including but not limited to animal models currently used in other scientific fields that have potential to benefit aging research; develop new animal models for aging research; develop unique cell lines for aging research; use comparative biology to identify models of highest priority for aging research; or develop informatics that enhance the utilization of animals for aging research. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-10-014, that encourages applications under the R01 mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
