Development of Power Electronics and Electric Motor Technology for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), Internal Combustion Engine Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) Traction Drive: This descriptive area provides an overview of Area of Interest 3 only. YOU MUST READ THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUCEMENT DOCUMENT FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPARE AN APPLICATION UNDER THIS AREA OF INTEREST. PLEASE SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE TO ACCESS THE MASTER FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUCEMENT, AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS AREA OF INTEREST. Area of Interest 3: Integrated Traction Drive System for Advanced Hybrid Electric Vehicles including Internal Combustion Engine HEV, Plug In HEV (PHEV), and Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) Traction Drive Applications (DE-PS26-06NT43001-03) The electric traction drive system, consisting of the electric motor, power electronic inverter, and DC/DC converter (if needed), is the principal propulsion component differentiating conventional and hybrid electric vehicles. The traction drive systems used in currently available HEVs are acceptable for the early adopter market. However, they are too costly, heavy, and bulky to allow the HEV to become a mass market option. Hence, proposals are sought for the development of advanced, traction drive systems that are smaller, lighter and less costly than those used in today's hybrid electric vehicle. The integrated traction drive system (advanced motor and inverter, and if needed DC/DC converter) should be capable of producing 55 kW peak power for 18 seconds and 30 kW of continuous power. To accommodate a variety of automotive platforms the design should be scalable to 120 kW peak power for 18 seconds and 65 kW continuous power. The system should be capable of operating reliably for 15 years. The system should cost no more than $660 to produce in quantities of 100,000 units per year, should have a total weight less than 46 kg, and have a volume less than 16 liters. The goal of the program is to achieve these targets with the use of engine coolant at a nominal temperature of 105C. The system efficiency should exceed 90% at 20% of rated torque over 10% to 100% of maximum speed. The nominal operating system voltage is 325V and consideration should be given to operation at higher voltage levels. Additional performance requirements are provided in Table 3. ( See Master announcement for Table) Building upon the latest advances in permanent magnet motor, inverter, and DC/DC converter technology applicants should make a case for the potential advantages of the proposed innovative design in both cost and performance over commercially available technology. This may be demonstrated either by laboratory testing or mathematical modeling. The proposed work must demonstrate the commercial viability and increased value relationship in terms of reduced cost, volume, and weight as indicated above
