Grant Description
This descriptive area provides an overview of Area of Interest 4 only. YOU MUST READ THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT DOCUMENT FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPARE AN APPLICATION UNDER THIS AREA OF INTEREST. PLEASE SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE TO ACCESS THE MASTER FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUCEMENT, AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS AREA OF INTEREST. Area of Interest 4: Bi-directional DC/DC Converter for PHEV Applications (DE-PS26-06NT43001-04) The converter would provide a boost function from the battery voltage to the high bus voltage required by the power electronics and electric mode, the charging of the batteries during the plug-in recharge, and recharging of the batteries during regenerative modes. By boosting the voltage a lower battery voltage can be used and this may lead to a smaller sized battery pack. The Phase I activity should include a systems optimization study to determine the vehicle system tradeoffs associated with higher voltage operation of the electric traction drive system in a PHEV application. The purpose of this study is to establish the need for and level of voltage boost that should be included in the converter. The Phase II work would focus on design and testing of a prototype unit. The converter should be capable of transferring at least 5kW of power between the low and high voltage buses and provide the necessary voltage boost to the traction drive system. It should cost no more than $75/kW, have a power density of at least 1.0 kW/l, and a specific power of at least 0.8 kW/kg. These targets should be achieved with an inlet coolant temperature of 105C.
